A Matter of Life and Death

15 March 2007, 19.30-22.00, Shoreditch Town Hall
Should we postpone the inevitable?
Some scientists predict that by the middle of the 21st century, medical research will have found a way of defeating and reversing the ageing process in human cells, allowing us to live, in theory, forever.
But is this really what we want? What will happen to us if death is no longer a central part of our lives?
A Matter of Life and Death was a unique evening of film, music and refreshments that examined our fear of death as a vital force in our culture.
A Matter of Life and Death was a contemporary take on memento mori (from the Latin meaning 'remember that you must die'). Visitors explored the playful installation conceived by designers åbäke and Martino Gamper while enjoying the premiere of a short film in three chapters - 'Falling', 'Freezing' and 'Faking' - from artists Onkar Singh Kular and Noam Toran. The film explores near-death experiences and how mortality is both celebrated and feared.
