Premature baby in an incubator
2005
This image was taken to illustrate an information leaflet for
parents with infants who are born prematurely and are put on a care
program in the Neonatal Unit. A SLE 5000 ventilator allows the baby
to breathe efficiently while a saturation monitor checks that the
oxygen concentration in the bloodstream is satisfactory. ECG
monitoring apparatus also ensures that the heart rate remains
constant. Central lines in through the navel allow the easy
administration of fluids and medication while a canula inserted
into a blood vessel in the arm allows the baby to receive necessary
antibiotics.
