Hanuman revealing Rama and Sita in his heart
This Kalighat watercolour painting shows a scene from the
Ramayana, an ancient Sanskrit epic. Lord Hanuman, a revered monkey
god and incarnation of Shiva, helped Rama rescue his wife Sita from
the ten headed King Ravana. Hanuman tore open his chest to reveal
an image of Rama and Sita in his heart to prove his devotion to
them. Kalighat painting is a school of painting in Kalighat, a
small district in Calcutta. It is named after the Hindu goddess
Kali. Kalighat painting originated from the folk art tradition of
rural Bengal. The Patuas or picture makers had migrated from Bengal
in the early 19th century.
