St Leopold's Church, Lower Austrian Institution for the Cure and Care of Mental and Nervous Disorders
Otto Wagner, coloured pencil, ink, drawing paper on canvas
When it was built in Vienna between 1903 and 1907, Steinhof was
the largest mental hospital in Europe. Like all psychiatric
institutions at the time, it had a chapel in which patients and
staff could worship. Otto Wagner used the commission as an
opportunity to design what he presented as the first modern
church: white, light-filled, and using the latest building
technology.
