Don't mess up, dress up
Durex advertisement, UK, 1994
Wearing a condom during sex is one of the most
easily accessible and effective ways of preventing HIV infection.
Alongside injunctions to use condoms, images of condoms and penises
wearing condoms appear frequently in AIDS posters, often in cartoon
form, as they do here.
This poster is a commercial advertisement for
the Durex brand of condoms, a product widely used before the advent
of HIV. Historically, the advertising of condoms as a means of
birth control had been restricted in many countries, and the
advertising of condoms on UK television is still regulated.
