500 years Native Americans have been battling…
Seattle Indian Health Board, colour lithograph by Shenoa Egawa Poster Designs, 1994
This poster, aimed at Native American
populations of the American Northwest, associates AIDS not only
with alcoholism but as part of a longer historical struggle against
many diseases.
The figure of 500 years is not arbitrary. 1992
marked the 500th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the New World,
and the year was marked by the organisation of many indigenous
political protests and commemorations, often using the slogan '500
years of resistance'. With its use of the figure, this poster
suggests a continuity between colonialism and AIDS.
