Shared rights, shared responsibilities: World AIDS Day
Karin Steenkamp, Department of Health, South Africa, 1995
This South African poster shows a multi-ethnic
smiling population wearing emblematic red ribbons below an image of
the world with South Africa picked out. Published by the South
African Department of Health, it publicises World AIDS Day.
The first World AIDS Day, initiated and
supported by the United Nations' World Health Organisation, was on
1 December 1988. The day's aim is to raise awareness of HIV and
AIDS as well as expressing solidarity with HIV-positive people and
remembering those who died from the virus. Memorial events,
meetings and charity events are often scheduled for the day. Each
World AIDS Day adopts a different theme in the battle against AIDS.
This poster expresses 1995's theme: 'Shared Rights, Shared
Responsibilities'.
