Sewer water in Silver Street, London in 1854
London, 1855
This drawing is taken from the Appendix to the report of the
Committee for scientific inquiries in relation to the cholera
epidemic of 1854. It was during this epidemic that Dr John
Snow established that cholera was a water-borne disease,
through analysing cholera deaths and linking them to one
water pump in Broad Street in Soho, central London. Silver Street
is close to Broad Street.
