The mosquito at a glance
Quick notes on Anopheles mosquitoes and
malaria
Malaria is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an
infected Anopheles mosquito.
Of the approximately 400 species of Anopheles throughout the
world, only about 60 are vectors of malaria under natural
conditions, some 30 of which are of major importance.
There are more than 2500 species of mosquito, although only a
minority feed on human blood.
Only female mosquitoes drink blood, usually to fuel the
production of eggs.
Female mosquitoes bite usually between sunset and sunrise.
