This was one of the very few photographs
Thomson took in China in which he appears himself. Here he was
trying out a newly manufactured field gun. While Thomson remarked
on the Chinese ability to produce weapons, but he was also deeply
worried about the poor quality raw material and the underpaid
labourers used at such places.
