Study days

We have two study days on offer at present. We are happy to try
to tailor these sessions to meet your needs.
Body Image
A study day of activities on the theme of body image, with both
creative and discussion-based workshops. The session uses Wellcome
Collection's two permanent galleries as a starting point for
considering body image in contemporary society, in the past and in
different cultures. Advances in science and technology have enabled
us to change, augment and repair our bodies in ways previous
generations could never have imagined; we look at the ethical
questions that arise from this ability and ask where it might lead
us in the future.
The session develops enquiry, literacy, debating and creative
skills and can be adapted to suit a variety of curriculum areas (so
far, we have adapted it for art and creative writing).
HIV/AIDS
This half-day study session uses the
Wellcome Library's HIV/AIDS poster collection to explore public
health campaign techniques, the history of HIV/AIDS and
contemporary sexual health issues. After analysing historical campaigns, students will be
challenged to design their own poster or storyboard for a short
film. One of the session leaders will be a sexual health worker,
allowing students to explore any questions or queries they might
have in a safe and informed way within a neutral environment.
The session has synergies with the Health and
Social Care syllabus, but it could also be booked for an art and
design group or as part of a students' sexual health programme.

us, you may find this new internet resource useful: http://learningpositive.com/
BOOKING
Please give us 4-6 weeks notice when booking. We do not have set
days for workshops, but will try to accommodate your visit at a
time to suit you. Please note that the galleries are closed on
Mondays.
To book students on to either study day,
please contact our Visitor Services team:

If you would like to discuss your particular
requirements, or an idea for a future project, please contact the
Youth Programme team:

E youthprogrammes@wellcomecollection.org
We do not have a dedicated space for students
to eat a packed lunch, but if you have booked a full-day study
session, the group will be able to eat in the workshop room.
What else can we offer?
We are keen to work with individual schools, teachers and youth
leaders to develop new sessions and resources that meet the needs
of young people. If you have a particular topic you would like to
explore or a challenge we can help you meet, please get in touch.
We would especially welcome suggested projects and activities
linked to our forthcoming temporary exhibitions, 'Brains' and
'Superhuman'.
Forthcoming exhibitions
Wellcome Collection has an ongoing temporary
exhibition programme, with major exhibitions lasting three to six
months. They can offer schools very specific curriculum links
and have the potential to support cross-curriculum
projects.
We hope to develop resources
(activity sheets, online trails and workshops) for schools
linked to these exhibitions – but we want to do some more work on
finding out what teachers would actually find useful before we
begin.
In the meantime, you can request a tour
of our temporary exhibitions from our Visitor Services
team:

Brains
29 March–17 June 2012
Rather than attempting to explain what the brain does, this
exhibition will show what humans do to brains in the cause of
medical intervention, scientific enquiry and cultural meaning.
Superhuman
19 July–16
October 2012
Human enhancement is an area of modern science
that provokes both excitement and fear. This exhibition will
question our assumptions about what an 'enhancement' is – it could
be a pair of glasses, a prosthetic limb, a vaccination or a bottle
of strychnine.
