Christ to Coke: How image becomes icon

15 February 2012, 19.00 - 20.00

In this talk, we’ll look at the main types of visual icon and see how images become icons. From the image of Christ’s face – the founding icon – and general icons such as the cross, the lion and the heart shape, we’ll move on to the Mona Lisa and Che Guevara, the Coca-Cola bottle and the double helix of DNA.

Speaker: Martin Kemp, Emeritus Research Professor in the History of Art, Oxford University, and author of 'Christ to Coke: How image becomes icon' (Oxford University Press, 2011).
