Dirt, sweat and tears
Thursday 21 July 2011, 18.00-19.00

In the 1870s and 1880s science discovered germs, microscopic
monsters that lurked wherever dirt was found, in every corner of
the home. Victorian housewives fought a never-ending battle against
domestic dirt and germs, aided by new cleaning products but haunted
by advertising that spread fear of dirt and played on moral
judgements of wives' and mothers' abilities to protect their
families.
Speaker: Dr Victoria Kelley,
course tutor at the Royal College of Art and senior lecturer at
University for the Creative Arts.
