Friday programme
Friday 2 December, 19.00–21.00

Music has long been used to celebrate the
glory of God’s creation, to offer the listener an escape from
worldly existence, and to invite contemplation of the heavens.
Music inspired by the wonders of science may be less common but is
arguably no less beautiful.
Join us for an evening of live and recorded
music, and explore the power of faith and science as inspirational
forces for great art. Enjoy a complimentary drinks reception, meet
your fellow symposium guests, and view the critically acclaimed
'Miracles and Charms' exhibitions away from the crowds.
19.00 Drinks reception and a
chance to see the 'Miracles and Charms' exhibitions.
19.00–19.30 and 20.00–20.30
Performances from the Marian Consort in the galleries.
A recording of ‘Allele’, from Music from
the Genome, will be played in the café at intervals throughout
the evening.
21.00 Wellcome Collection
closes.
About the Marian Consort
Taking its name from the Blessed Virgin Mary,
a popular focus of religious devotion in the sacred music of all
ages, The Marian Consort was formed in 2007 at Oxford University.
Since then, this ‘astounding’ (The Herald) ensemble has given
concerts throughout the UK and Europe, has been featured on BBC
Radio 3’s The Early Music Show and In Tune, and
is a current ‘Young Artist’ of The Brighton Early Music
Festival.
The group’s ‘auspicious’ debut disc, of Marian
Devotional music of the Spanish Renaissance, has invited praise
from reviewers for its ‘fluent performances’ and ‘flawlessly
executed programme’, and was singled out by Andrew McGregor on
Radio 3’s CD Review for its 'attractive and arresting sound'.
