Music and the brain

 

Join leading musicians, neuroscientists and psychologists as well as gifted young performers to find out more about the musical brain. Sessions will explore the science of music, music and autism, music in infancy and more. There will be opportunities for all to participate and find their inner performer.

Talks and performance

Morning

• Join Robert Zatorre of McGill University, Montréal for an introduction to the brain science of music.

• Psychologist Pam Heaton and neurologist Tim Griffiths explore music making and autism with three talented young performers.

• David Aldridge, Editor of 'Music and Medicine', demonstrates the therapeutic uses of music.

Afternoon

• The Medici Trio perform Shostakovich's Piano Trio no 2 opus 67.

• Neuroscientist Lawrence Parson, psychologist Colwyn Trevarthen and Robert Turner from the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig join forces to explore music and language in infancy.

Songtrees workshop

Workshops start at 13.30, 15.00 and 17.00.

In addition to the talks there will be workshops throughout the afternoon which are suitable for all ages and abilities.

Created by Chika Robertson as part of the Music Mind Spirit Trust, this innovative music project brings children and families together to rediscover, learn and then perform music drawn from family member's earliest musical memories. This session is facilitated by internationally renowned composer and conductor Jonathan Willcocks and is a delightful opportunity to sing songs and share memories whilst creating family and community spirit through the celebration of music.
