Pain is an important warning signal that can help us to avoid
harm, but for people living with prolonged, chronic pain it can
have devastating consequences. Stephen McMahon, Director of
the London Pain Consortium, talks to the Wellcome Trust's Daniel
Glaser about his research into the causes of chronic pain and new
ways to treat it.
At 01.13 Professor McMahon refers to the object below, a hand
spring compressor, which test-subjects use to exercise their hands
and arms during pain experiments.

This packed lunch event was recorded live on 18 July 2012
at Wellcome Collection.
