Science And Faith in the Middle Ages

20 October 2011, 18.00 - 19.00

Monks practising alchemy
How did medieval thinkers seek to solve questions of nature and the universe? Was scientific knowledge based on empirical fact, religious doctrine or blind faith? Explore approaches to science in the Middle Ages through the Wellcome Library collection. This talk will investigate manuscripts relating to natural history, cosmology and alchemy to discover the extent to which practical experiment, philosophical theory and religious belief directed and shaped medieval scientific thought.

Speaker: Stephanie Seavers, PhD Researcher and Teaching Fellow, History Department, University College London.
