Shifts in Perception
18 July - 19 July 2008, 18.00 - 18.00
An event for the inquisitive - join us to celebrate the
extraordinary ways we perceive the world around us. Performances
and activities throughout Wellcome Collection will explore how
science allows us to appreciate far more than what first meets the
eye.
Join us on Friday night for talks, activities and performances,
and on Saturday the 'Dancing Time' marathon will continue
from 12.00-17.00. Drop in at any time to take part and
combine it with a visit to the 'From Atoms to Patterns'
exhibition.
In support of the 'From Atoms to
Patterns' exhibition.
This event is free. No booking necessary. Drop in at any
time.

Dancing Time: A photographic performance marathon
A combination of performance, music and photography. This 'slow
dance' will be performed in front of a human audience and a bank of
pinhole cameras. During the performances, images will be exposed,
developed and displayed to show glimpses of these bodies moving
slowly in the light. The performance will continue
throughout Saturday afternoon. Created by David Harradine, produced by
Fuel.
Factual Fiction Forensic Drawing
How do we describe a unique object to ourselves or others? Have
a go at forensic drawing and piece together the information and the
clues. This creative activity explores territory between verbal and
visual perception using artefacts in Wellcome Collection. Activity
led by Alex Julyan.
Know Thyself?
How do you feel? Can you put your finger on it? Is it on the tip
of your tongue? If so, put pen to paper and contribute to this
collection of ideas on the human body. Activity designed by Gethan
Dick and led by Tom Levine.
The Lightswitch
Project
Take part in a collective research experiment that explodes the
mundane task of flicking on a light switch into a series of
microscopic moments. How do our eyes perceive darkness? What
happens inside the light switch? And where does the electricity
come from? Activity led by Tim Vize-Martin, Pete Harrison, Lucy
Foster and Toby Jones.
Live music with
Resonance FM 104.4
With Resonance FM artists
Oscillatorial Binnage, an electro-acoustic sound collective
comprised of Chris Weaver, Fari Bradley, Toby Clarkson and Dan
Wilson. With Johnny
Trunk, presenter of the Original Sound Track Show.
Blow your face up!
Blow your face up with illustrators Gethan Dick and Mat Huntley.
These portraits will make you see yourself in a whole new light and
create a strange crowd of balloon twins.
The Diamond Light
Source
Diamond Light Source
provides one of the brightest lights in the world, this
'synchrotron light' can penetrate deep inside matter and allows
scientists to investigate the world around us at the scale of atoms
and molecules. Come and find out how these intriguing and beautiful
images are captured and how they can help advance our understanding
of science. With Thomas Sorensen, beamline scientist.
