Beauty is often remarked to be only 'skin deep'. Since the 17th century, a multimillion-pound industry has developed that feeds on our aesthetic concerns about skin. This talk traces the roots of this industry, its consequences for the individual and its relationship with health, comparing early modern skincare preparations with today’s practices.

Speaker:
Stefania Crowther, Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine, UCL
