Preserved brain of Helen H Gardner, women’s suffragist
Wet specimen (human tissue), d. 1925
Helen Hamilton Gardner (born Alice Chenoweth, 1853–1925) was a
leading American campaigner for women's suffrage and educational
rights. She was a vigorous contributor to the 'sex in brain' debate
and argued that the female brain was not "demonstrably different
from that of a man under the same conditions and with the same
opportunities for development". Her preserved brain is one of 70
remaining in the Burt Green Wilder Collection in the Psychology
Department at Cornell University.
