Head exhibiting Lepra tuberculosa
Undated (late 19th century)
Leprosy was once believed to be highly contagious
and sexually transmitted, and was often confused with
syphilis. In fact the exact mechanism by which leprosy is
transmitted is unknown, although prolonged close contact and
transmission by nasal droplet have both been proposed. Patients
with tuberculoid leprosy have a limited form of the disease
characterised by flat or raised skin lesions of various sizes.
