Max Perutz devoted his career to researching haemoglobin, the
vital oxygen-carrying protein molecule in the blood, whose
structure he determined in 1959. From 1947 he headed a research
group at the Cavendish Laboratory, which later evolved into the MRC
Laboratory of Molecular Biology.
