Street demonstrations and lectures by medical practitioners were
an important part of Bermondsey’s public health education. Dr D M
Connan, Bermondsey’s Medical Officer of Health, insisted that “The
Medical Officer who relies upon the poster or pamphlet to do his
work for him is not likely to exert much real influence upon the
education of his people”.
