Mexico is a huge country with a variety of landscapes and traditions to match. The deserts, mountains and jungles have been the stage for a turbulent history that has left its legacy everywhere: you can discover the well-preserved remains of ancient empires, the living culture of the Maya and the graceful, prosperous colonial towns built by the Spanish. Your trip will begin in Mexico City. This dynamic city of over 20 million inhabitants is dotted with magnificent churches, world-class museums and art galleries. Frida Kahlo's house, now a museum, and the 'Floating Gardens' of Xoximilco are intriguing additions. With the city as a base, you can easily visit the enormous pre-Aztec pyramids at nearby Teotihuacán, once home to a startlingly advanced civilisation.

After a few nights in the city, you will be driven north to the colonial heartland. Central Mexico hosts a chain of beautiful colonial towns. Here, you can spend lazy afternoons in leafy plazas listening to live music or sampling the delicious local cuisine. Your next stop will be Guanajuato. As one of the first places to be colonised by the Spanish, elegant Guanajuato is situated in a fertile, partly forested rolling plain where the tributaries of the Lerma river meet. This town is filled with churches, convents and impressive colonial architecture, and is where a large proportion of the votive paintings on display in the exhibition are from.

Afterwards, continue your journey to colonial gem San Miguel de Allende. The agreeable climate and picturesque hillside setting of historical San Miguel de Allende have persuaded many artists to make it their home. Its elegant colonial buildings and cobbled streets are certainly picture perfect. There is also a great selection of art galleries, boutiques and restaurants to enjoy. After two nights, return by road to Mexico City for one last night before taking your overnight flight back to the UK.
