rAndom International's Reflex, an installation in the windows of the Wellcome Trust on Euston Road, transforms the windows into the habitat of an organism that represents itself in the form of light. Collectively reacting to the presence of the viewer, the individual elements of Reflex are intended to generate a physical dialogue between the building, the institution of the Wellcome Trust and the public.

The movement of the lights through the windows is based on an algorithm that has been developed by researchers to find out how insects collectively make decisions. It is the simulation of life itself, and the effect the exposure to this simulation has on the viewer, that rAndom is currently fascinated by.

rAndom's installations are never driven by pre-programmed animations but are based on algorithmic representations of actual behaviour. This inherently allows for error, experimentation and unpredictability and seeks to evoke wonder, engagement and unpredictable behaviour in the viewer.

The video above shows Reflex in action and members of the public interacting with it.
