Roman West
Burial site: Atlantic House, 46-50 Holborn Viaduct, EC1
Roman law prevented the burial of the dead within the boundaries
of the city. Instead, purpose-built cemeteries were located on the
main roads leading out of London. The burial site to the west of
the city was situated on the road to Silchester, Hampshire. Part of
this site was uncovered in 2000 during the redevelopment of an
office building on Holborn Viaduct. The Romans practised both
cremation and inhumation - the burial of corpses - and this site
revealed evidence of both. This image shows the area as it looks
today.
